Prism Group's Daily Summary

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR MCCARTHY?

Following the uncertainty around appropriations funding last week, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has formally moved ahead with a vote that will test both Republican support for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and what Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), want to play in this speakership showdown. Speaker McCarthy has two days (today and tomorrow) to schedule a vote on Rep. Gaetz’s resolution. That vote could come up as early as noon today."

THE STATE OF THE STATES

SESSIONS BY THE NUMBERS:

Seven state legislatures are in session. Oklahoma is in special session.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:

Oklahoma legislators are returning to the legislature today for a special session. Governor Kevin Stitt (R) called for a special session last month to deliver tax cuts to Oklahomans. However, leaders in the legislature do not see eye-to-eye with the governor, expressing concern over tax cuts actually costing the Sooner State billions. Ohio’s Department of Education and Workforce begins operations today, replacing the former Department of Education. While the new department will address workforce issues in addition to education, there has been some controversy over the department’s overhaul, with lawsuits from former Department of Education members alleging violations of the state constitution.
