REPRESENTATIVES ARE THROWING THEIR HATS IN THE RING FOR THE SPEAKERSHIP...

After Rep. Kevin McCarthy was vacated from the House speakership, the House Republican Conference has deliberated replacements for leadership positions. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA-1) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH-4) have declared their candidacies for the speakership. But with speakership elections not due to occur for another week, uncertainty remains high in the House.


THE SENATE DELIBERATES CHIPS ACT OVERSIGHT... Yesterday, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing gauging implementation and oversight of the CHIPS Act by the Department of Commerce. The archived broadcast may be found here.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:

Governor Ned Lamont (D) announced a new strategic roadmap for offshore wind development in Connecticut. The roadmap emphasizes innovation and workforce development, aiming to create high-quality, well-paying jobs alongside renewable and affordable power. The launch of the Connecticut Wind Collaborative, a public-private partnership, will support these efforts and encourage collaboration in the offshore wind industry.

In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey (D) signed a comprehensive tax relief package into law. The package delivers reductions totaling $561 million in the first fiscal year, with a framework to provide over $1 billion in relief by FY2027. The package includes various cuts and credits, including increasing child and dependent tax credits.

  • Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced a bill to amend the Federal Deposit Insurance Act to provide for insurance for noninterest-bearing transaction accounts.

  • Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced a bill to bill to establish requirements for the Federal Trade Commission with respect to certain rules related to automotive retailing.

  • Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) introduced a bill to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 and the National Labor Relations Act to clarify the standard for determining whether an individual is an employee.

AT THE AGENCIES The US Department of Labor

The US Department of Labor announced that it will host an annual conference for the nation’s mine safety and health trainers at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy from Oct. 10-12.

The US Department of Commerce announced that the United States will participate in the sixth Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) negotiating round in Kuala Lumpur.

The US Trade Representative

The Office of the US Trade Representative announced that Ambassador Katherine Tai will discuss updates on the Biden-Harris administration’s worker-centered trade agenda at the Center for American Progress.

The US Small Business Administration

The US Small Business Administration announced that it had approved over $139 million in disaster assistance loans for the Maui wildfires.
