Senior Associate, State Government Affairs

This person will work directly with trade associations, Fortune 500 companies, and small businesses seeking information on active state legislation and strategy around engagement.
Prism Group has one of the America’s strongest, most experienced fifty state government affairs functions. Like few other firms, we specialize in customizing dynamic nationwide state government engagement programs for clients.
This position reports directly to one of our partners and will support him in servicing all clients, including but not limited to those in our food and agriculture, workforce, and small business portfolios.
This position is one of growth and provides a hands-on opportunity to learn state government affairs from highly respected experts.
Role Summary
We are looking for an attention-oriented professional who can communicate clearly and effectively. This person will directly report to and support one of our firm’s partners with primary responsibility for state government affairs management. This person must be able to work with organizations representing a wide variety of viewpoints as all our team members support each other and all our clients. This person must come prepared with a spirit of cooperation and openness.
Primary Responsibilities
Support a Prism Group Partner managing state affairs clients.
Track and monitor client priority legislation and provide alerts and reports.
Prepare written and oral communications ((letters, reports, memoranda, email updates) around complex policy topics to share with clients, trade association members, lawmakers, and staff.
Develop relationships with state legislators and staff, as well as key stakeholders.
Plan and coordinate state lobby events virtually and/or in-person.
Assist with grassroots activations and related tasks.
Other duties on a state and federal level as determined.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
At least two years’ experience with a trade association, state government or Congress.
Direct experience within or working with state government is highly desirable.
Ability to work in a bipartisan setting with multiple clients of varying interests.
Must be comfortable as a public speaker and meeting leader.
Exceptional writing abilities. Writing samples will be expected.
Basic understanding of the legislative process including tracking legislation using on-line platforms.
Excellent time management skills and ability to balance deliverables in a multi-client environment.
High attention to detail and can exercise critical thinking in a fast-paced environment.
Flexibility to travel and work outside of the office and/or during evenings or weekends.
Location
This is a full-time position based at our office in downtown Washington DC. Currently, Prism Group employees work remotely on Mondays and Fridays, unless otherwise warranted by client meetings or travel. We are in-office on Tuesday-Thursday. Normal business hours are usual, but this person must be able to work evenings or weekends if needed.
