HOUSE TO VOTE ON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT REAUTHORIZATION… Today, the House is expected to vote on and pass H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act (ASWA), which reauthorizes the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). ASWA will be considered under suspension of the rules, meaning no amendments will be considered and it must garner a 2/3 majority vote to pass; ASWA passed out of the House Education and the Workforce Committee in December on a bipartisan 44-1 vote.
READING THE TAX BILL TEA LEAVES… In a dear colleague letter sent Friday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer alluded to his timeline for moving the House-passed tax package, possibly in the “weeks and months ahead.” Many have speculated that Schumer may ultimately opt to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, rather than let it languish in committee.
ENGINEERS CLEARING COLLAPSED BALTIMORE BRIDGE SAY LIMITED-ACCESS CHANNEL TO PORT WILL OPEN IN 4 WEEKS... The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in seconds on the morning of March 26, 2024, after being struck by the cargo ship Dali, which lost power twice after leaving Baltimore. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced a tentative timeline to produce limited access to the port in just four weeks. Hundreds of small businesses have been affected by the bridge’s collapse spurring the SBA to open an emergency center to help those businesses navigate the tragic event.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:
In Washington state, Amazon's employment numbers dropped by 3,000, to 87,000 employees, marking its first annual decline in the state, even as the company increases its workforce in elsewhere in the U.S. This shift has led to Washington's slip to third place behind Texas for Amazon employment in the U.S., according to analysis of the company's latest employment statistics.
Delaware's economy has significantly improved under Governor John Carney (D) since facing a $400 million budget shortfall in 2017, but is now facing a mismatch of 31,000 job openings and only 21,000 job seekers. The Delaware Business Roundtable's 2024 Investment Agenda explains the challenge of a growing senior population and a corresponding labor shortage, particularly in sectors critical to the state's economic growth.
