LEAD HOUSE TAX-WRITER BATTLES WITH PARTY OVER 2025 STRATEGY...
House Ways & Means Chairman Jason Smith (R-OH), who will play a central role in next year’s tax policy debate and its ultimate outcome, is pushing back on a plan floated by some Republicans to advance a border security bill early next year, followed by a comprehensive tax package. Smith has been working to develop the broad strokes of that framework for months now, but will face an uphill battle when it comes to moving a tax bill in short order.
HOUSE COMMITTEE ON SMALL BUSINESS REAPPOINTS CHAIR… Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25), Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business, issued a statement that he is grateful to his colleagues for reappointment as the 119th congress’ Committee Chair.
SMALL BUSINESSES PLAN EVENTS, START MARKETING EARLIER TO DEAL WITH SHORTER HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON... This year’s holiday shopping season is shorter, with just 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving small businesses less time to maximize sales. Despite the time crunch, retail sales are expected to rise by 2.5% to 3.5%, with online shopping predicted to grow by 8.4%. To stay competitive, small businesses should focus on promoting deals across multiple channels, including social media and physical ads. Building customer loyalty through exclusive offers for repeat buyers can also help drive success during the condensed holiday period.
THE STATE OF THE STATES
SESSIONS BY THE NUMBERS:
Seven states are in regular session.
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) said he won’t sign the next state budget if it includes GOP-backed proposals requiring state employees to return to the office. Evers also voiced concerns about mass deportations under the incoming Trump administration, pledging to fight any policies that could be perceived as harming Wisconsin’s agricultural and manufacturing workforce.
In his final budget proposal for North Dakota, Gov. Doug Burgum (R) called for $19.5 billion in investments to boost North Dakota’s workforce, housing, child care, and infrastructure. Pointing to a $392 million revenue surplus, Gov. Burgum urged lawmakers to prioritize permanent tax reform over temporary relief measures.
