SENATE REPUBLICANS FORM TAX WORKING GROUPS… Just a few weeks after House Ways & Means Chair Jason Smith announced the creation of Republican “tax teams” to formulate legislative proposals heading into 2025, Senator Mike Crapo – the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee – told reporters he was doing the same. The move is yet another sign that GOP taxwriters are moving on from the bipartisan tax relief package and are shifting their focus to the 2025 “fiscal cliff.”

THE STATE OF THE STATES

SESSIONS BY THE NUMBERS:

Thirteen state legislatures are in regular session.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:

Californian Democratic lawmakers are leading the charge in AI regulatory bills, with dozens of bills sitting in the state Legislature. Governor Gavin Newsom (D) warned against both over-regulation and over-indulgence, hoping to help California become a standard-setter on artificial intelligence technology.

As New York nears the end of its legislative session, Governor Kathy Hochul (D) aims to finalize measures expanding regulations on social media use by children. The legislation looks to end the use of algorithmic-based feeds for users under 18, meant to place guardrails on potentially harmful social media practices.
