Prism Group's Daily Summary

HOUSE PUTS SHUTDOWN RESPONSIBILITY ON THE SENATE... House Republicans passed a continuing resolution bill – which maintains current spending levels for another seven months – forcing Senate Democrats to decide whether to stand up to Trump or risk a government shutdown in three days. With at least eight Democratic votes needed, the party remains divided, and key swing-state senators are noncommittal. Concerns over political blame and Trump’s potential control over agency shutdowns weigh heavily as Democrats scramble to form a strategy.
SENATE PANEL HEARS FROM KEY SBA NOMINEES... The Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee will have a hearing on William Briggs’ nomination to be deputy administrator and Casey Mulligan’s nomination to be chief counsel for advocacy, both positions in the Small Business Administration. The hearing is scheduled for 2:30pm – Prism Group staff will be in attendance and will provide updates on any relevant developments.
LAYOFFS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION... Yesterday, the Trump Administration laid off more than 1,300 workers at the Department of Education, bringing total Department of Education layoffs to effectively half of the agency since the Trump Administration started. Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, said these layoffs won’t impact loan financing, civil rights enforcements, or disabilities education. An Executive Order dismantling the Department has been expected for some time, even though it takes Congressional approval to shut down an agency.
