HARRIS PLAN PUTS SMALL BUSINESSES FRONT AND CENTER... Current VP and presidential candidate Kamala Harris yesterday rolled out her economic policy priorities in a new document entitled, “A New Way Forward for the Middle Class.” Notably, it focuses largely on small business policy, with a stated goal of launching 25 million new SB applications in the next four years, boosting the existing $5,000 small business deduction for startup expenses tenfold, and creating a new standard deduction for entrepreneurs similar to the existing one available to individual filers, among several other proposals.
CHAIR SHAHEEN APPLAUDS $500,000 IN STEP FUNDING THAT WILL BOOST GRANITE STATE SMALL BUSINESS EXPORTS – A RECORD AMOUNT FOR THE GRANITE STATE... U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, today applauded New Hampshire’s $500,000 State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) award through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), a record amount for the state. The award is part of $20 million in grants to 43 state and territory international trade agencies that will help small businesses offset the cost of training, market research, website upgrades, trade missions and other activities that can help them begin or expand sales internationally. Funding will become available September 30th, but state trade agencies are authorized to begin soliciting applications now.
CONGRESS PASSES CONTINUING RESOLUTION... On Wednesday, Congress passed a stopgap measure to extend government funding at current levels through December 20, lining up a year-end, lame-duck scramble to finalize a budgets under a looming December shutdown. The dynamics of those negotiations will largely depend on the results of the upcoming November elections for the House, Senate, and presidency.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING:
A state audit in Nevada revealed that over $10 million in pandemic relief funds were awarded to state small businesses with questionable eligibility. The Governor's Office of Economic Development is implementing changes, but lawmakers have critiqued the lapses in monitoring during the pandemic.
Washington Governor Jay Inslee (D) warned that challenges in locating clean energy infrastructure could delay the development of AI technologies crucial for climate solutions. Gov. Inslee supports the state’s progress on clean energy, but is fighting to preserve his signature climate policy amid a potential repeal by voters in November.
